QMN Saloons @ Brands Hatch
On the 30th of May 2016 our VZ hit the track for the first time in over a year.Over a year ago we had a big off going into Paddock Hill at Brands Hatch avoiding another car, substantial panel damage was caused amongst other things and the car needed a full strip down to check everything over plus all the gravel needed removing (that stuff gets everywhere). As we had the VE is play with we decided to give the VZ a little rest, that was until bank holiday Monday.
Brands Hatch Indy was the venue and the QMN Saloon Championship was the series. As this was the first outing of the car since the crash we were treating the day as a test session as apposed to a race.
For qualifying we needed to bed in a set of new discs and pads, this didn't leave us with much time to in many flying laps. Unfortunately we also had to run a hard compound 17" tyre as softs are no longer made in the correct size, these tyres are really not suited for the short qualifying and sprint races. By the time we had scrubbed the tyres in and bedded the brakes in we had time for only one flying lap, which got us up to 5th.
Race 1 and Alex got up to 4th place and was chasing down third, but by the time the tyres starting getting some grip the laps were running out. With only a couple of laps to go third place was insight but an over eager right foot coming out of Graham Hill bend fired the rear end round and off we went. Fortunately the VZ recovered and we took 5th place.
Due to the spin all four tyres were flat spotted, so we would need to run on a brand new set of hard's. As they were not scrubbed in and they take so many laps to get any heat in we knew we were going to be on the back foot from the off.
Race 2 was pretty uneventful for us as the cars in front were able to pull away due to our lack of grip over the first half of the race, once the tyres started generating some grip we were able to starting bringing down the gap but it was too late in the race and we finished where we started.
As this was the first outing for the VZ the main aim was to make sure it went round and round without any issues, so from that point of view it was a successful day.
We are currently trying to find a solution to the tyre situation as the hard compound Dunlop's are really no use in sprint races. The 18" COFT wheels with medium compound tyres are slightly too big and touch the wings with the slightest turn. So our options are to try and get a softer compound tyre made in the correct size or have some wings fabricated that can accommodate the larger 18" wheels.
