Last weekend we made our way to a very chilly and damp Donington Park for the Euro Saloons final two races of the season.

First up was an early morning qualifying session, the circuit was cold, damp, greasy and wet in places, which makes for far from ideal conditions for the rear wheel drive Holden.

Alex was struggling to get any kind of heat in the tyres and it became apparent our diff change wasn't the best choice for this circuit. Alex decided that rather than go all out in qualifying and risk having an off on the greasy circuit that it was best to take it easy. Qualifying ended  with Alex in 10th place.  Checking the tyres back in the paddock and they were still stone cold after 12 laps of the 1.9 mile circuit, which explains the lack of grip through the fast corners.

Next up was Race 1, Alex got a good start and by the second corner had jumped up to 5th place. Prebble in the lighting fast EVO grabbed a place back into the Esses. Unfortunately Alex ran on at the Esses on the second lap which dropped him right down the field and gave the leaders time to pull out a huge gap while he recovered. The race was now on to gain back as many places as possible.

Picking his was through the pack he got up to 9th place but 8th place onwards was too far out of reach due to the time lost getting the Holden back on track after the detour.

On the to final lap and Alex was still running 9th, after slowing to let the leaders past Keith Butcher in the Ginetta G50 gained on Alex and decided to lunge into a non-existant gap at Coppice hitting the Holden, pushing Alex wide. With only Starkeys straight and the Esses to go, there wasn't enough time for Alex to take the place back and he finished where he started in 10th place out of the 31 competitors.

Not one of our better races but at least finished albeit it with a small amount of wheel damage.

On to Sunday and we were greeted with a very foggy and very wet Donington. The first session of the morning was delayed as the fog was too heavy and showed no signs of lifting. Our race was due to start at 10.30 but it was still deemed unsafe to allow any racing to take place. Fast forward to midday and an announcement came over the tannoy that if the fog had not lifted by 12.30 the days racing would be called off. With only ten minutes to spare the fog finally lifted.

Due to the delays our race had been shortened from 20 minutes to 13. With such a short race distance, a damp track and cold temperatures we would never have been able to scrub in the new slicks we were planning to race on. A quick tyre change was needed back to a set of used slicks.

Finally two and half hours later race 2 was underway. Alex blasted into 8th by the first corner and by the end of lap one he was up to 7th. He then started chasing down Wayne in the rapid little Suzuki but having to be careful in the corners as it was still damp and greasy. Not long into lap two and Andy Robinson in the Falcon had a heavy coming together with Dave Cockell's Escort Cosworth sending him into the barrier, which brought out the safety car for 3 laps while the cars were recovered.

This left only one laps racing at race pace, which wasn't enough time to make up any further places and Alex finished 4th overall, with a 2nd in class, much better than the results from the previous days racing.

This concludes the Euro Saloons championship for 2012 and we have really enjoyed the four rounds we have participated in, with its close, clean racing. We would like to thank all the competitors and organisers for welcoming us into the championship and the allround friendliness of everyone involved.

Having not contested a full season means we were never in contention for the champion but we did finish 4th in class and 14th overall. Full championship standings can be found here http://www.eurosaloons.co.uk/Downloads/Standings_2012.pdf

Next weekend we are back out again racing with in the QMN championship, which we won last time out at Brands. Lets hope we can pick up another couple of trophies for the office!
